118. Talk(Speak) of the devil, here he is now.
호랑이도 제 말하면 온다더니 그가 나타났어
'호랑이도 제 말하면 온다' 는 속담이 있다.
영어로는 "Talk(Speak) of the devil!"이라고 한다. 예를 들어 이야기를 하고 있는 사람이 갑자기 방으로 들어 왔다면 "John said he'd be coming ― and talk of the devil, here he is now." (존이 곧 온다고 했어. 호랑이도 제 말하면 온다더니 그가 나타났어.)라고 말할 수 있다.
'devil'은 악마나 사탄을 뜻하는 말. 사람에 적용되면 '놈' '녀석' 쯤에 해당한다.
"You luck devil!" (너는 운이 좋은 놈이야.), "He failed his examination, the poor devil." (그가 시험에 떨어졌어. 불쌍한 놈.)
'like the devil'은 무엇인가 굉장히 열심히 할 때 사용한다. "We ran like the devil." (우리는 열심히 뛰었다.)
'고생문이 훤하다'라는 속담의 경우도 'devil'을 사용해 "There'll be the devil to pay."라고 표현한다.
A: What do you think of the new guy in our team?
B: Well, in general he seems like an easy-going person. I'm surprised how open-minded he is.
A: Yeah, very broad-minded.
B: Did you notice how he likes to show off his knowledge of current affairs?
A: Yeah, but he's a nice person. It's a pleasure working with him.
B: But I noticed he….
A: Hey, talk of the devil, here he is now.
A: 우리 팀에 새로 온 친구 어때?
B: 대체로 느긋한 성격인 것 같아. 굉장히 개방적인 성격이라 놀랐어.
A: 그래 다른 사람들의 의견을 존중해 주는 것 같아.
B: 그가 시사문제에 대해 많이 알고 있다는 것을 과시하고 싶어하는 거 아니?
A: 응, 그렇지만 좋은 사람이야. 함께 일하게 돼서 기뻐.
B: 그렇지만 내가 느끼기에 그는….
A: 헤이, 호랑이도 제 말하면 온다더니 그가 온다.
