75. It's second to none.
그것이 최고다.
어느 분야에서든 최고일 때 "As a singer she is second to none." (가수로서 그녀는 최고다.)이라고 한다. 'second'는 누구나 알고 있듯이 '두번째'라는 의미인데 'second'와 결합한 다양한 의미의 단어들이 있다.
우선 'second'가 복수로 사용되면 싼값에 팔리는 이등품' 또는 하급품'이란 뜻. "If you want to buy dishes cheaply, you can get factory seconds." (접시를 싸게 사고 싶으면 공장에서 제조한 하급품을 사면 된다.) 추가로 또는 두 그릇째 주문한 음식의 의미도 있다. "He asked for seconds." (그는 음식을 추가로 요청했다.)
'second-best'는 '두번째로 좋은' 또는 '차선의'라는 뜻이 있다. "This is my second-best suit." (이것은 내가 가지고 있는 두번째로 좋은 옷이다.) 'second-hand'는 '중고품' (second-hand furniture/ books/ cars-중고가구/책/차) 을 의미하며 우리가 흔히 사용하는 'used'와 같은 표현이다.
"I got this book second-hand."라고 하면 "이 책을 중고로 샀다. "라는 뜻이다. 'a second-hand bookstore'는 '헌책방'을 가리킨다.
간접으로 어떤 정보나 소식을 들었을 때도 'second-hand'를 사용한다. "It was a second-hand report, based on what his friends had told him." (그것은 그의 친구들이 그에게 말해 준 것을 기초로 한 간접 보고서였다.) 반면 'first-hand information' 은 '직접 얻은 정보'라는 뜻이다.
A: Have you heard about the new Italian restaurant near here?
B: You mean 'Naples' ?
A: That's the one. Yesterday, I went there with my friends and had Lasagne. It was wonderful! I think it's second to none.
A: 이 근처에 새로 생긴 이탈리아 식당에 대해 들어 봤니?
B: 나폴리 말이니?
A: 바로 거기야. 어제 친구들하고 가서 라사냐를 먹었거든. 굉장히 맛있었어. 최고로 맛있는 라사냐인 것 같아.
