58. You can say that again!
네 말에 전적으로 동의해
의견을 말할 때는 너무 공격적으로 보이지 않게 자주 사용하는 구절들이 있다. 공식 회의석상이라면 'I'd like to point out that…' (다음과 같이 지적하고 싶습니다), 비공식적이라면 'If you ask me…' 'The point is…' 'I'd just like to say that…' 'I think that…' 'Don't you agree that…?' 가 자주 쓰인다. "내 생각을 말하자면" 이란 뜻이다.
상대방의 말에 동의하면 "You're right." "That's true." "Absolutely/ Definitely!" "That's just(exactly) what I was thinking." "I couldn't agree with you more." "That's a good point." (맞는 말이야) 라고 맞장구를 쳐준다.
격의 없는 사이라면 "I'll say." "You can say that again!" (맞아!) 라고 한다.
상대방의 말에 반대할 때도 있다. "I disagree." "I don't (can't) agree." "I don't think so." (그렇지 않아) 가 흔히 쓰는 말. 그러나 더 정중하게(politely) 표현하는 게 좋다. "Yes, that's quite true, but…" (맞는 말씀이지만), "I hate to disagree with you, but…" (반대하기는 싫지만), "Well, you have a point there, but…" (일리가 있지만), "Maybe, but don't you think that…" (그럴지도 모르지만 이렇게 생각할 수도) 등이 무난하다.
아주 친한 사이라면 "Are you kidding?" (농담하니?), "Don't make me laugh!" (웃기지마), "Come off it!" (거짓말 하지마!) 이 자연스럽다.
A: My computer is very old model!
B: Yes, that's true. However, don' t you think that it's in excellent condition? You can upgrade yours to 64K simply by adding an expansion chip.
A: Hmm. You can say that again!
A: 내 컴퓨터는 너무 구식이야!
B: 네 말이 맞아. 그렇지만 상태는 아주 좋지 않니? 확장칩만 추가하면 64K로 간단히 업그레이드 할 수 있어.
A: 음. 네 말에 전적으로 동의해.
