24. My landlord gave me his word he would not raise my rent
집주인이 집세를 올리지 않겠다고 약속했어요
미국은 대부분 집을 빌리면 매달 임대료(rent)를 지불한다. 보증금(deposit)은 한달치 월세. 이사할 때 되돌려 받는다. 그러나 가구나 설비가 더러워지거나 파손됐다면 그 액수만큼 보증금에서 공제한다.
집주인(landlord 혹은 landlady)이 처음 약속과 달리 임대료를 올려달라고 요구하기도 한다.
이럴 때 "My landlord gave me his word he would not raise my rent, but he did." (우리 집주인이 집세를 올리지 않겠다고 약속했는데, 이번에 올려달라고 이야기를 하는군.)라고 불평을 터뜨리곤 한다. 누군가에게 무엇을 해 준다는 약속을 할 때 'promise'와 같은 뜻으로 'give one's word' 라는 표현을 쓴다.
비슷한 표현으로 "She kept her word about coming to Susan's birthday party." (그녀는 수전의 생일 파티에 오기로 한 약속을 지켰다.)' "They assured the work would all be finished by next Friday." (그들은 다음주 금요일까지 그 일을 모두 끝내기로 약속했다.)' "My employees promised they would not go on strike." (종업원들이 파업하지 않기로 약속했다.) 등이 있다.
그가 약속을 지키는 사람이면 "He's a man of his word.", 반대로 약속을 또 어겼다면 "He broke his word to me again."이다.
A: I am very disappointed in (with) my landlord.
B: How come?
A: He gave me his word he would not raise my rent, but he did.
B: What a shame! Why don't you go and talk to him about it?
* shame : something that deserves blame ; something that ought not to be. What a shame that it rained on the day of your garden party!
A: 우리 집 주인한테 실망했어.
B: 왜?
A: 그가 집세를 올리지 않겠다고 약속을 했었는데, 집세를 올렸지 뭐야.
B: 너무 하는군! 집주인한테 가서 그 문제에 대해 다시 이야기해 보는 것이 어때?
