86. How can I put it?
어떻게 말해야 되나?
말을 하는 도중 대화가 끊어질 경우, 그리고 자신의 생각을 이야기하는 도중에 말이 막히거나 할 때 쓰는 상투어가 있다.
'um', 'uh', 'well', 'let me see', 'well, let's see now', 'in fact', 'you see', 'you know', 'the thing is', 'how can(should/ shall) I put it', 'it's like this, you see', 'sort of' 등이다.
우리말로 '글쎄' '음' '뭐랄까', 혹은 속어로 '에-또' 정도의 표현이다. 어떤 구체적인 의미가 있다기 보다 다음에 할 말을 연결하기 위한 역할을 한다.
이러한 'hesitation'(망설임)의 표현이 사용된 예를 살펴보자. "Well, I, you know, uh …the thing is, we should do something to prevent people from building more motels on the beach." (글쎄, 음… 내 말은, 바닷가에 더 이상 모텔들을 짓지 못하도록 우리가 무엇인가를 해야만 한다는 이야기예요.)
'sort of'는 그저, 또는 '다소'라는 뜻으로 많이 사용되는 표현이다.
"I sort of thought you might say that." (나는 그저 당신이 그렇게 말할지도 모른다고 생각했다.) "I was feeling sort of …well …ill, really." (정말로 …그러니까 …몸이 별로 안 좋았어요.), "She is - how can(should/shall) I put it? - not exactly fat, but a little heavy.(그녀는 - 그러니까 뭐랄까 - 정확하게는 뚱뚱하다기보다는 좀 몸집이 클 뿐이에요. )
A: What's your opinion about the genome project?
B: The genome project? I've heard a lot about it, but I don't exactly understand what it is. Well, you know, in my opinion, -how can I put it?- uh… it could help to cure hereditary diseases when completed.
A: 지놈 프로젝트에 대해서 어떻게 생각하세요?
B: 지놈 프로젝트요? 많이 듣기는 했는데, 정확하게 이해하지는 못하겠어요. 글쎄, 내 생각엔 - 어떻게 말해야 하나? - 그러니까 그것이 완성되면 아마도 많은 유전적인 병들을 치료할 수 있을 것 같아요.
