The representatives for the 16th National Assembly will take office on the 30th of April.
제16대 국회의원들의 임기는 4월 30일에 시작된다. 제16대 국회의원 선거(general elections for the 16th National Assembly) 가 지난주 있었다.
지역구의원 2백27명(227 selected in direct voting) 과 전국구 의원 46명(46 distributed to parties in proportion to votes they gained in constituencies) 등 모두 2백73명(273 seats) 의 새 의원이 생겼다.
정치인이 공식적으로 임기를 시작하는 것을 'take office' 라고 한다.
"The representatives for the 16th National Assembly who were elected last week will take office on the 30th of April." (지난주 선출된 제 16대 국회의원들의 임기는 4월 30일 시작된다.) 'office' 라는 표현은 관직이나 공직의 의미다.
"That politician has been in office for 10 years." (저 정치인은 10년 동안 공직에 몸담고 있다.) "Which party will be in office after the next general election?" (다음 총선 후에는 어느 당이 집권할까?) "Our party has been out of office for a long time now." (우리 당은 야당이 된 지 오래다.)
잠깐! 정치인의 취임 선서에는 'swear in'을 수동태로 쓴다는 것도 알아두자. "The new President was sworn in on Inauguration Day." (새 대통령은 그의 취임식 날 선서를 했다.)
A: Which party did you vote for in the last election?
B: I gave my vote to the more handsome candidate.
A: What!
B: I'm just kidding.
A: 지난번 선거에서 어느 당에 투표했니?
B: 나는 잘 생긴 후보에게 투표를 했지.
A: 뭐라고?
B: 농담이야.
