37. Take a stand if you believe in something
네가 무언가를 확신한다면 의견을 분명히 밝혀라
미국에 있는 친구에게서 딸의 고집이 세서 걱정이라는 메일이 왔다.
"She is so stubborn that she won't listen to me." (그녀는 너무 고집이 세서 내 말을 들으려고 하지 않아.) 이처럼 '고집이 세다'는 뜻으로는 'stubborn'이 쓰인다.
고집 센 사람은 흔히 노새(mule:고집쟁이)나 돼지로 비유된다.
"The pig-headed custodian insisted on trying to force the window closed, and naturally the glass broke." (고집이 센 관리인이 창문을 억지로 닫으려고 애쓰다가 결국은 유리가 깨졌다.)
반면에 본인의 의견을 확실하게 주장하고 단호한 태도를 보일 때에는 'stand' 가 쓰인다.
"That was one of the few demands on which she had stood firm." (그것은 그녀가 고집했던 몇 안 되는 요구사항 중 하나였다.) "Stand firm(fast). Don't let them change your opinion." (단호한 태도를 취해라. 그들이 네 의견을 바꾸도록 내버려두지 말아라.) "He took a stand for his principles." (그는 그의 신념을 위하여 싸웠다.) 한 가지! 'take the stand'란 표현은 증인석(witness box)에 선다는 뜻이다.
"Will the next witness take the stand?" (다음 목격자가 증인석에 섭니까?)
A: What's wrong with you? You look upset.
B: I've got a good idea of a new project, but my boss didn't listen to what I was saying.
A: Cool down. Take a stand if you believe in something.
A: 무슨 일이야. 기분이 안 좋아 보이는데.
B: 새로 시작하는 프로젝트에 대해서 좋은 생각이 있는데 우리 사장(팀장) 님은 내가 말한 것을 듣고 있지도 않았어.
A: 기분 좀 가라앉혀. 그리고 네가 그것이 좋다고 생각하면 너의 의견을 분명히 밝혀.
