42. Take a left and it's the first building on the right
왼쪽으로 돌면 오른쪽에 있는 첫 번째 건물입니다
길 가르쳐 주기(giving directions)는 생각만큼 쉽지 않다. 이럴 때 쓰이는 전형적인 표현을 알고 있으면 편리할 때가 많다.
우선 '이쪽으로 곧장 가세요' 라는 표현.
"Go up(down) this street to the traffic light." (이 길을 따라 신호등이 있는 곳까지 가세요. ) "Go straight this road until you come to a(the) crossroads." (교차로가 나올 때까지 곧장 가세요. )
돌아야 할 때는 "Turn left/Take a left at the end of this street." (이 길 끝에서 왼쪽으로 도세요.) "Take the second turning on the right." (두 번째 분기점에서 오른쪽으로 도세요.) "Take the left fork." (갈림길에서 왼쪽으로 가세요.) 등의 표현이 쓰인다.
위치를 말해 줄 때는 "Go past the bank and it's on your left." (은행을 지나가면 왼쪽에 있어요. ) "It's the first building on the right." (오른쪽의 첫 번째 건물입니다.) "It's around the corner from the Lotte Hotel." (롯데 호텔에서 모퉁이를 돌면 있습니다.) "It's about a ten-minute walk/ride)." (걸어서/차를 타고 10분 거리입니다.)
"You can't miss it." (찾기 쉽습니다.) "Have you got it?/ Got it?/ Do you follow me?/ Okay?" (아시겠어요?) 등의 표현도 흔히 쓰인다.
미국의 횡단보도에는 'Xing' 이라는 글귀가 바닥에 쓰여 있다. 'crossing'이란 뜻이며 'crosswalk' (횡단보도)를 의미한다.
A: Excuse me, Sir. Could you tell me how to get to the post office?
B: Okay, walk straight this street for about 200 meters. Then take a left and it's the first building on the right.
A: Thanks a lot.
A: 실례합니다만, 우체국에 가려면 어떻게 해야 합니까?
B: 이 길을 따라 2백m쯤 가다가 왼쪽으로 돌면 오른쪽에 있는 첫째 건물입니다.
A: 고맙습니다.
