52. bumper-to-bumper
자동차가 꼬리를 물고 선
현대인의 족쇄는 교통혼잡. "I got stuck in traffic for an hour." (한 시간 동안 차안에 갇혀 오도 가도 못했다.)인 경우가 많다.
"교통이 혼잡하다"는 뜻으로는 "The traffic is pretty heavy." 또는 "There's a lot of traffic." 등의 표현이 있다.
'congested' 나 'busy'를 사용해 "Chongno is always very congested(busy) ." (종로는 항상 아주 혼잡하다.) "Two cars have had a head-on collision. So traffic is very congested." (자동차 두 대가 정면 충돌하는 사고가 있어 교통이 매우 혼잡하다.)라고도 한다.
자동차들이 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 서있을 땐 뭐라고 할까. "The traffic was bumper-to-bumper all the way home." (집으로 오는 길 내내 교통이 매우 혼잡했다.)이라고 한다.
이럴 땐 물론 자동차가 가다 서다를 반복한다. 그래서 'stop and go' 라고도 한다.
"It took us twice as long to get to our destination because it was stop and go all the way." (교통이 너무 혼잡해 자동차가 거의 움직일 수 없었으므로 목적지까지 두 배나 더 오래 시간이 걸렸다.) 이럴 때 교통방송은? "Keep away from Chongno until further notice." (추후 안내방송이 있을 때까지 종로는 피해 가시오.) 라고 한다.
A: Why were you late this morning?
B: There was an accident on Chongno. Two cars had had a head-on collision, so traffic was very congested.
A: Really? There was a serious accident blocking two lanes on Chongno yesterday. The traffic was bumper-to-bumper all the way home.
A: 오늘 아침에 왜 늦었니?
B: 종로에서 사고가 있었어. 자동차 두 대가 정면 충돌해 교통이 매우 혼잡했어.
A: 정말이야? 어제도 종로에서 차선을 두 개나 막는 큰 사고가 있었는데. 그래서 집으로 오는 길 내내 교통이 너무 혼잡했어.
